GENERAL ITEMS. Melbourne, September 3. At the annual meeting of the Freetrade Democratic Association a new platform was adopted, demanding the abolition of all protective duties, a reduction in and ultimate abolition of existing bonuses, and no new bonuses to be granted. The association also declared for the extension of local selfgovernment and federation of the colonies on a basis of absolute prohibition of intercolonial duties. September -4. Mr Tlios. Brassey, son of the Governor, and editor of the Naval Annual, who is now on a visit to Melbourne, is in favor of replacing the ■six cruisers by three or four larger ones.
