GENERAL ITEMS. Auckland, Sept. 2. A cablegram was received to-day from the Hon. Mr M'Cullough that he leaves London per Tongario for Wellington on the 17th instant. There were lively scenes at the Women's Liberal League; Id members resigned as a protest against the tactics at the last election. Recriminative charges were bandied about. Constable" Thompson was fined 10s and costs on a charge of using more force than neccessary in arresting a prisoner. Mr Northcrolt said that further than a little excess of duty the constable had a clean sheet. It is stated that the fine and costs will be paid by public subscription. Chkistchi-bch, Sept 2. The appeal of Cecil Louisson, licensee of the Hereford Hotel, against his conviction before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., on a charge of having supplied intoxicating liquor to Henry Drummond when the latter was in a state of intoxication, was heard in the Supreme Court to-day, before Justice Denniston who allowed, the appeal on the ground that th#re was no evidence before him that the liquor supplied was iatosicat*
ing. A man who had accompanied Drummond to the bar of the hotel, and who had, it appeared, stated in the Magistrate's Court that they had each had a glf.ss of beer, now said that he could not say what it was that Drummond hrd had. His Honor said ho considered this witness's testimony unsatisfactory hut held himself hound by the evidence before him. He remarked that the present procedure of appealing on fact was absurd as it allowed a person whose case had already been heard before a competent Magistrate an opportunity of having the matter retired before a different tribunal after the case for the other side had been fully exposed. Dunemn, Sept., 2. At the Supreme Court to-day, Michael Mullanev, farm laborer, was found guilty on two charges of as"saulting a man named Yates. The jury recommended him to mercy on account of previous good character, and sentence was deferred. John Bell, a seaman, indicted on two charges of theft from a steamer on which he had been engaged, was found guilty on one and setenced to six months. The offences, which took place in 189*2 and ISOB, were only recently traced. The funeral of the 'Rev. Father Newport, drowned near Port Chalmers, took place to-day and was largely attended.
