Sad Drowning Fatality.

A CATHOLIC PRIEST THE VICTIM. [By Telegraph.] [Special to Standard.] Dunedin, This Day. Father Newport went across to Portobello in a boat accompanied by a man named Docherty and three boys, one named Euddy and one Pound. When returning to port, the boat capsized off Quarantine Island. The accident was seen from the port, and several boats set out to render aid. Father Newport was picked up floating with his face downwards insensible, and was brought to port as quickly as possible. Everything was done to restore animation, but withont effect. The boys were taken to the quarantine island and both were soon out of danger. The rev. gentleman, who was a good swimmer, lost his life in saving one of the boys, having exhausted his strength in keeping the boy afloat. Three-quarters of an hour elapsed from the time of ths accident till the rescue party arrived on the spot. Father Newport was born in Dublin, and studied at Baekstock college, Dublin, and at Paris. After being elevated to the priesthood he spent some time in Mauritius, coming on to-A«stß»tia«i4 Dunedin sixteen years ago. He was parish priest at Gore for some years, was 48 years of age, and was in bis year of priesthood.
