A POLITICAL SHUTTLECOCK.

The statement of the Minister of Lands that the Bank of New Zealand is going to be a political shuttlecock is, we are afraid, only too true. The misfortunes of this unfortunate institution give to the outs just the chance needed for slanging the Government, and while there is not much harm in criticising the administrative acts of the Government, the constant references to the Bank will tend to weaken it, by causing the confidence of the people to be alienated. Political interference of one kind and another will always stand in the way of the progress of the Bank of New Zealand, and will, if carried to extremes, bring about its collapse. If Parliamentary inquiries such as the one now in progress are to be recurrent, then the fate of the Bank of New Zealand is not difficult to foresee. As the Minister of Lands said, it would have to be liquidated and cleared up.
