THE ESTIMATES.

The House has settled down to discussing the Estimates, but in spite of long sittings not much progress is being made. It would be idle to expect speedy work with the Estimates while the report of the Legislative Council Banking Committee" has still to come in. The Opposition members are no doubt "playing with the Estimates, and spinning out the time in order that this report maybe furnished. Once this has been done we venture to say that the work will progress by leaps and bounds. The Opposition evidently expect that the report of the Committee will furnish it with political capital for the general election, but on this point the Opposition may be sadly disappointed. However, the House Committee should be ready with its report this week or early next week, and then we shall see what we shall see.
