Lord Brassey on the Bible.

Speaking in Melbourne on Thursday, at the meeting of the British and Foreign Bible Society, Lord Brassey said that whatever there might be in his past life in regard to religion to be thankful for and whatever to regret, he had endeavored to follow the wise injunction of Jeremy Taylor in his "Holy Living," where he said "Set apart some portion of thy time for the reading of Holy Scripture, and, if it be possible, every day read or hear some of it read. When it is in your power to, then accustom yourself to those portions which are the most plain and certain, and which contain the story of the life and death of our most blessed Saviour." It was possible that he (Lord Brassey) did not attach the same importance to strictly dogmatic teaching, and to the subtlety of the creeds, as some of his reverend friends, but he yielded to none of his reverend friends in thankfulness for the moral teaching which was contained it the Bible. It was difficult to advance any new view to that which they all recognised namely, the unspeakable value of the Bible, but if anything could be drawn from a new force it would be found in looking beyond the ranks of those whose privilege it was to be in the full sense believers. Professor Huxley spoka of the Bible in terms which must most fully commend the value of that great work — the diffusion of the Bible to all lands. He was thankful for such testimony from a source which was not so closely associated as one might wish in a close belief in all the precious truths which others accepted and so greatly valued.
