Auckland, August 2G. Frank Cork, bricklayer, aged 45, fell from a scaffolding at noon while engaged making alterations to the Loan and Mercantile Company's premises. He survived only half-au-hour. Deceased was a married man with seven children. Several employers have been fined for breaches of the Factory Act, also a woman for not having her house registered under the Infants Protection Act. In the action brought by Michael and Bridget Sheehan, claiming £SOO damages from the City Council in respect of their son's death by drowning at the salt water baths in January last, a verdict for plaintiffs, with damages £125 was returned. The August meeting of the Auckland Coursing Club was commenced to-day. Sixteen dogs are left in the Recover}' Stakes, and eight dogs in the Champion Collar Stakes. The finals will be run on Saturday. Wellington, August 20. A circular was received by the Education Board to-day from the Education Department intimating that the Minister for -Justice cannot allow police officers to accept appointment as truant officers, though constables would continue to render all possible assistance in the enforcement of the School Attendance Act. After a brief discussion the Board decided to consider the matter at its next meeting. In the Supreme Court an action was brought by William Bottrell, a clerk, against Archibald Hall, tramway proprietor, for £-305 damages for injury sustained by plaintiff while riding on the step of a tram car which collided with an omnibus. The jury awarded £250, and costs according to scale. Reefton, August 26. A nine-roomed house, the property of Mrs Mills, has been burned to the ground. It was insured for £250 in the Commercial Union office. This makes the fifth fire within 48 hours. It was a clear case of incendiarism, and a young man named Smith has been arrested on suspicion and remanded for seven days. Chefstciicrch, August 26. A storekeeper at Waikcuaiti was charged under two informations with being unlawfully in. possession of a seal-sk'n, blubber, Arc., and with unlawfully taking and killing a seal during the clese s*-M>rn. The defendant pleaded guilty and said he had found the seal on the beach and shot it, not thinking that sort were protected. The Collector of Customs said as the defendant had doubtless acted in ignorance of the law, he would ask leave to withdraw the ioformatioh under section 46, which provides for a penalty of £SOO. Leave was granted and a fine of £5 inflicted. The Collector pointed out that the public shoull all know seals were protected. Invercargnx, August 26. The charges of indecent assault and attempting to commit a criminal assault preferred against two young men at the Bluff was heard to-day. The first charge was dismissed, there being no forroboration of the girl's statement. Although several persons were in the vicmitv thay heard no outcry nor disturbance. The girl said she was - ring from quinsy, which with the t Ainent of the struggle prevented L . -creaming. The other case had no; finished when the telegraph office closed, but the evidence was no stronger. A witness said he saw the complainant in friendly conversation with the accused, who was much the worse of liquor and not likely to run after a woman as she said.
