NAPIER NOTES.
[From Our Own Correspondent.] Napier, August 20. A public meeting of those interested in the breakwater question was held in the Athenaeum yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance. Mr Coleman (chair), in a long speech, in which figures • were prominent throughout, dealt with the question of the petition being signed in favor of stopping the breakwater. Someone suggested that the petitions be withdrawn for the present, but Mr Essex stated that there would be some difficulty in doing that as they were distributed broadcast. After a lengthy discussion, which at times was decidedly warm, it was resolved that the petitions remain in circulation, only two voting for an amendment. that they be withdrawn. The F Battery ball last evening Avas a very jolly affair, and the Garrison Hall was well filled. I noticed some of the Hastings corps amongst the visitors. Newbould's band supplied excellent music, and a good supper was done full justice to. The Debating Society of the Junior Club have decided that Imperial Federation is desirable, which should have the desired effect. I think I am safe in stating that it is certain that the totalisator will not yet be abolished, andithat Mr Carnell's Bill will be amongst the " slaughtered innocents "to be announced in a few days. The Borough Council voted £4 to the police last evening in connection with the larrikin nuisance, being rewards for convictions against juvenile offenders.
