GENERAL ITEMS. AvcKLAxn, August 19. The "Wellington team of footballers arrived by the Mahiir.ipua this morning to carry out their engagement with the local representatives on Saturday. The visitors were met at Onehunga, ami conveyed to town in a brake. With regard to the visitors' defeat by Taranaki yesterday, the captain attributes the loss simply to the fact of their having met with a better team. The match on Saturday is creating a great amount of interest amongst the followers of liugby in Auckland. New Plymouth, August 19. Ilardcastle, the Wellington footballer who sustained concussion of the brain in the match against Taranaki on Tuesday, is progressing favorably and hopes to rejoin the team on Saturday. Wellington, August 19. The secretary of the Trades Department ho-, e ha-- been advised that the box-making trade in England continues to share in the general briskness, and that there is a large demand for suitable timber. Mr Amelias Smith, secretary, states that the white pine which was sent home in the trial shipment of New Zealand timbers realised the highest price, and desires to direct the attention of the trade to the opening of the market. The arrivals in the colony in June were 981 and the departures 1275 ; the arrivals in July 1072 and the departure 1000. Mr Fisher intends to stand for Wellington as an independent candidate, and not in conjunction with anyone else.
A satisfactory tost of beef thawed by the process invented by Mr Peek took place to-day at the (rear Meat Company's premises, before a number of M.H.R.'s and others. WAXiiAxn, August 19. The Eev. L. M. Isitt has just concluded a four nights' temperance mission. It is unanimously admitted that never in the history of Wanganui has there been such an enthusiastic and successful series of meetings on any subject that has come before the public. The drill-hall was packed to the doors each night, and at the conclusion of this evening's address the audience, uumbering 1300, rose and cheered the lecturer. TtMAKf, August 19. John Russell Wilson, laborer, was sentenced to six months for deserting his wife and two children in 1892. He was arrested at Invercargill recently on a warrant issued in 1892, and it was then found that he had committed bi.tramy, on which charge he is now awaiting trial at Invercargill. Invi-;rcakgox, August 19. Two young men have been arrested at the Bluff on serious charges. About the beginning of the month a young woman not long resident in the place was attacked bv larrikins while going home after da'rk and very roughly treated. One of the accused, August Fowler, is charged with indecent assault' on her ; the other, Walter Anclem, with intent to commit criminal assault. They have been reminded for a week. Two old settlers, Thomas Swale (Longbush) and W. C, Moore (YVaihiwi), died yesterday. Both bad been in the district since 1861.
