FOOTBALL.

QUEENSLAND v. NEW ZEALAND,

[By Telegraph.]

[Special to Standard.]

Wellington, this day

The football match between Queensland and New Zealand was played on the Park on Saturday. The weather was abominable, the rain coming down in torrents. The attendance was therefore not up to the mark. The game was a miserable exhibition, the heavy ground preventing anything like good play. Of course the visitors were at a disadvantage in that respect, but fought a plucky up-hill game against odds. New Zealand obtained three tries, none of which were converted, the game resulting in favor of the MaorUaaders by!

nine points to nil. This is the third consecutive defeat of the Queenslanders. The Welling Don team left this morning by the train for New Plymouth, where they play the Taranaki men to-morrow afternoon. The Wellington Union has spent an extra £36 on train fares rather than let the men play after coming straight o£ the sea voyage. The full team has got away, except that Laws replaces Hales at full-back and Gage will not go further . than New Plymouth, after which Ben- T nett takes his place. Great interest is taken in the doings of this team since their recent successes; and it is expected that they will come back, after the experience of their northern tour, the best fifteen that ever represented a New Zealand province. The Queensianders leave for the South to-day.
