The two new steamers which are being built for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand are to be named Moana and Waikari. Fine rain has fallen over the eastern division of the colony, but has not gone far inland.

The Greek residents here have started a fund to assist the distressed Cretans. About £IOO has already been forwarded.
The Sydney Morning Herald says the weather undoubtedly had more than a usual share in deciding the test match and pressed specially hard on the side which had to go in last. At the same time, it says, the result must be accepted as indicating that the Australians are really a strong team. Melbocf.ne, August 14.
It is now stated that Parsons, the bicyclist, did his mile at Chicago in lmin f34s€C, or 4 2-osecs better than his Australian mile, but this is not the world's record, as was at first reported.
