(Evening Post.) A Chinaman named "Willie Gee has been committed for trial at Sydney on a charge of obtaining 10,000 cigarettes by means of a valueless cheque. Major Burnett, late of the 2nd Regiment, died at the Sydney Hospital from injuries supposed to have been caused by a fall. It is reported that a heavy claim for damages has been made by the relatives of the men recently killed by the explosion of a boiler-pipe on board the steamer Wendouree at Adelaide. At the annual meeting of the Sydney Hospital Saturday Fund Association the Governor handed over cheques totalling £3700 to the representatives of the various hospitals. At C'obar (N.S.W.), James Gaffey, the man who, when arrested in Auckland, made a dash for liberty, has been committed for trial, charged with horse-stealing. This year a very krge quantity of has in the past been sent to Melbourne will come to Sydney from the Riverina stations. Peter Smith, whilst riding over the hurdles at the Roma (Queensland) show, was killed. His horse struck a hurdle and rolled on the rider, who died in the hospital half an hour later. Business at the southern collieries of New South Wales has been slack during the past fortnight. The miners anticipate receiving a bonus on all coal sold during the strike time at an advanced rate. At the Bathurst Quarter Sessions John Lerosa, alias "Slippery Jack," was sent to gaol for five years for breaking and entering diggers' huts. ■ The returns of the New South Wales banks for the past quarter show a shrinkage in deposits and an increase of advances, indicating a passing away of the period of contracted business. During the past six months Victoria exported wheat to the value of £31,425, as against £325,283 for the same period of the previous year. At Perth, Thomas Robert Libbis has been committed for trial on a charge of bigamy, he having been married in Melbourne prior to his marriage in West Australia. Mrs Borthwick, of New Thebarton (S.A.) has died at the age of 101. She was born at Haddington, Scotland. Three men engaged in the recent Sunday religious faction fight at Brunswick (Vic.) have each been fined £5. The clipper ship Derwent has accomplished the trip from- London to Sydney in the quick time of 83 days. To keep pace with the demand for kerosene, the refinery at Hartley Vale, N.S.W., has lately been kept going till 10 o'clock every night. This is quoted as another instance of the fillip given to industry under Free Trade. By a fire in a cottage at Bendigo, Mrs Cummins, aged 68, was burned to death.
