THE COMING ELECTION.

[To the Editor.]

Sir, —I am informed that the Prohibitionists of Hawke's Bay intend to spring a surprise on the electors in a few days by announcing a candidate in their interests for this seat. In accordance with their plan of campaign they are going to run candidates in every electorate where sitting members do not subscribe to their platform. It is said that a big fund is behind them, though a hole will no doubt be made in it on behalf of the defendant in a recent Christchurch prosecution. Be that as it may, I think the body is deserving of every credit for nobly fighting its cause. Sooner or later they must win, and the sooner the better. The liquor traffic is becoming a greater curse every day, and as the House of Representatives as at present constituted is likely- to do nothing in the matter, it behoves all who have the interests of the masses at heart to make a change. There are at present members of our Legislature who would disgrace any assembly men who drink more beer in a day than the average '' tippler," and men who do not know how to behave themselves. With such legislators to make our laws, is it surprising that the liquor traffic is fairly and squarely considered; I venture to say that when the House meets in June next, many of the present members will not be there, and that they will be. supplanted by men who look the drink curse fairly in the face. —I am, &c.,

Adam Bede.
