THREATENED STRIKE AMONG THE PROFESSIONALS. London, August 8. Gunn, Lohmann, Abel, Richardson, and Hayward, the professionals chosen to represent England in the final test match, have asked that they be paid £2O for the match. Surrey offered £lO and expenses, which is the same fee as paid them for matches at Lords and Manchester. The Players contend that their wages have not improved while the gate money has largely increased, and that the Australians' share is disproportionate to that of the Players. The Press sympathises with the Players, but condemns a strike on the eve of an important match as it is likely to imperil the chances of England in the contest. Although the Players have reconsidered their demand, they have been omitted from the team, which will comprise the following:—Grace, Peel, J. Hearne, Mold, Pougher, Jackson, Lilley, Stoddart, Ranjitsinjhi, Wynyard, and Maclaren.
