The Banking Inquiry.
SOME STARTLING FIGURES.
(From our Special Correspondent.) Wellington, this day. The witnesses examined before the Legislative Council Banking Committee yesterday afternoon were the Hon Mr McLean and the Hon Mr Stewart, directors of the Colonial Bank. The Premier declined to attend to give evidence until the No-confidence motion in the House is finished. One return placed before the Banking Committee shows the following amounts paid by way of fees in connection with the Bills by the Bank of New Zealand : —Buckley, Stafford and Treadwell, Wellington, £416; Bell, Gully, and Izard, Wellington, £253; C. E. Burton, Auckland, £299 ; Buddie, Button and Co., Wellington, £504 ; Kenyon and Hosking, Dunedin, £632. In connection with the banking legislation of 1894 John Murray was paid by the bank £SOO for services rendered and £5Bl in reimbursements, including costly London cablegrams. The amounts written off from 1888 to 1896 were : New Zealand, £1,184,697 ; Australia, £606,990 ; Fiji, £15,671 ; London, £3,999 ; not specified, £1,284,442 ; total, £3,095,799. The writing off in 1888 amounted to £216,885. Later. Mr Seddon has intimated to the Banking Commission of the Council that he will be prepared to give evidence before them to-morrow afternoon.
