GENERAL ITEMS. Auckland. August 6. The store of Mr William M'Naughton, Kanohi, near Helensville, was burned down. It was insured in the Royal for £l5O. The case Kelly v. Inspectors Clifton and Ross was tried at the S.M. Court, Hamilton. The claim was for £75 for sheep poisoned through eating grain laid for the extermination of rabbits. Decision was reserved. The Auckland bird show was opened by the Mayor to-day. A thousand birds were exhibited, coming from the Thames, Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington. The child of a man named Andre, at Whangamata, five years old, was killed by a kick from a horse. A gumdigger named Thomas C. Grant died suddenly at Tenni, Wanarei. He was formerly a captain in the 16th Regiment, and well connected in England. Wanganui, August 6. The representative match Nelson v. Wanganui was played to-day in capital weather. Wanganui won by 28 points to nil. Wellington, August 6. The band contest in connection with the exhibition begins on December 80th. Invitations have been issued to all the New Zealand ' and some of the leading bands in Australia. Upwards of £2OO will be given in prize money. v The steamer Waihi is still on the beach at the north of the Wairan river. It is expected that the work of launching her into the river will occupy eight or ten days. Alexander Urquhart, charged with stealing three lambs near Featherston, was acquitted after a trial lasting two days. Timakc, August 6. In the football match Southland v. At a meeting of Irishmen to consider the matter of being represented at the convention of the Irish race at Dublin, a resolution was passed deploring the differences which exist in the Irish party, and asking them to bury political differences and once more form a united party. It was resolved to appoint Mr Michael Davitt as delegate, and cable him to express a wish for unity. The directors of the Westport Coal Company have declared an interim dividend of 24 per cent, for the half year ending June 30. The return from the Roxburgh Amalgamated Sluicing Company for the month was 2140z 13dwt 15gr, value £826 10s. A dividend of 6d per share had been declared.
