NAPIER NOTES.

[From Our Own Correspondent.] Napier, August 6. There was a very large attendance at the entertainment at St. Paul's schoolroom last evening in aid of the funds of the Sunday school library. The Rev. Mr Patterson delivered an address on "Books and how to read them." A service of song, "Dibs" was given by the Sunday school choir, and was very well received. Mr N. Renaud officiated at the organ and Miss Cole at the piano. Mr F. Griffin made an able conductor. Altogether the affair was a very enjoyable one. The Junior Club Debating Society have decided that " the land legislation of the colony is on a firm basis." Inspector Emerson is daily improving, and he should be himself in a day or two. A plain and fancy dress ball was held at Stuart's Hall last evening in connection with that useful institution the Spit Fire Brigade. There were about 50 couples present. Clarke,s Band supplied excellent music, and the floor being in good order the dance was thoroughly enjoyed. Messrs Lucas and Franklin made efficient M.C.'s, and the catering was under the supervision of Mrs Condon, which is sufficient guaradtee that it was firstclass. At the Borough Council meeting last evening, a lengthy communication was received from I)r Milne Thompson in regard to the unsanitary condition of the sewers and closet-traps, and after discussion, the letter was referred to the Public Works Committee for report. At the annual meeting of the Town and Suburban Racing Club yesterday the following officers were appointed : President, Mr Cohen ; vice-president, Mr Broughton ; treasurer, Mr Rymer ; judge, Mr M'Cartney ; stewards: Messrs Ryan, Stock, Neagle, Rymer, Lawton, Harpham, O'Donoghue, Falconer, and Siddells ; starter, Mr Piper; clerk of course, Mr Howard ; clerk of scales, Mr Turley, handicapper and secretary, Mr Binnie; clerk of totalisator, Mr Cox; timekeeper, Mr O'Donoghue; auditors, Messrs Cox and Waterhouse.
