GENERAL ITEMS. Wellington, August 5. The barque George Thompson, which put into Wellington disabled last year, and caused a considerable asnonnt of trouble, has beer, sold in Glasgow for £730. At the inquest on the late MiHayes a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. Deceased had once before slipped into the water at the same place and had a narrow escape. Arbor Day was formally celebrated by planting trees on the Thorndon esplanade. There was a large attendance. The custom is largely growing of buying plants and flowers for children to set in private gardens on this day. CIIKISTCHUEC'IT, August 0. A thief entered some bedrooms at Warner's Hotel last night and stole £24 in notes from a poeketbook of one of the lodgers and £5 10s in gold from that of another. To-day being Arbor Day, some tree planting was done by school children at New Brighton, but there was no other celebration of the occasion.
