Hastings School Committee.

♦ MONTHLY MEETING

The usual monthly meeting of the School Committee was held in Mr* Maddison's show-room last night. Mr Maddison occupied the chair, and there were also present Messrs Morgan, Goldsmith, Tong, Chrystal, McQuillan, and Cook (Secretary). The inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From the Rev. A. S. Morrison, M.A., thanking the committee for acceding to the request of the ministers to be permitted to give religious instruction in the State school once a week before school hours—Received.

From the Rev. Father Smyth, acknowledging the receipt of the committee's resolution re religious instruction in the State school, and stating that whilst thanking them for their courtesy in inviting him to deliver instruction to the Catholics attending the State school, ample arrangements for religious teaching were made in the Catholic schools, and the few children of so-called Catholic parents who attended the State school, notwithstanding the imperative ruling of the Church on the matter, must abide by the consequences. t The report of the recent pupil teachers' examination was laid on the table, and the chairman in commenting upon it said that the greatest praise was due both to Mr Smith and the candidates for the creditable manner in which they passed the examination. Mr Smith was to be congratulated upon the fact of there not being a single failure amongst those he sent up. The tenders for erecting the fence between the school and the master's house were opened and dealt with as follows :

Sowersby, £6 6s 6d per chain, 15s being allowed for tha old fence. Simpson, £8 2s 6d per chain, 5s being allowed for the old fence. Brausch, £6 18s per chain. On the motion of Mr Tong Mr Sowersby's tender was accepted. Accounts to the amount of £4 Os 8d were passed for payment. Messrs Tong and Fritchley were appointed the visiting committee for the month. This concluded the business.
