IN HOUSE AND COUNCIL,
[By Telegraph]
(From our Special Correspondent.) Wellington, this day. On the Council meeting yesterday afternoon, a message was received from the Governor announcing the vacancy in the seat occupied by the late Hon Mr Pharazyn, whereupon the Hon Mr Walker moved the adjournment of the Council out of respect to his memory. This was agreed to after short tributes to his memory were passed by Captain Baillie, Hon Mr Stevens, Hon Mr Kelly, and Dr Grace. The annul report of the Lands Department shows #ie total number of selections last year to be 2865, or 318 in excess of the previous period. The total number of forfeitures was 674. The territorial revenue last year was £24,493 below the amount received the previous year. The area taken up during the year was 2,662,344 acres being 550,000 acres more than the previous year. The average size of four selections last year was 162 acres. Several blocks of land are being prepared for selection at the present time, more especially in the North Island, but it is almost without exception broken forest country, suitable mostly for pastoral pursuits.
