GENERAL ITEMS. Auckland, July 22. Sir Robert Stout addressed a public maeting at the City Hall, the Mayor presiding. There was a crowded audience, and the speech was strongly condemnatory of the Government. He said if the Goverment was put out the-e was no fear but that an independent Liberal party would arise who would carry out true Liberal measures. He declined to speak on banking matters, on the ground that it would be improper. A vote of thanks was accorded by acclamation. A sensational shooting affair is reported from Te Aroha. Mr R. Clough, post-master, was fired at by his assistant, Archie M'Kee, a messenger at the post-office, who suddenly developed symptoms of insanity. He enticed Mr Clough to the river bank, saying that a man bad had a fit there. He then fired two shots at him with a MartiniHenri rifle, but both shgjjflkissed. They were so close that felt the concussion of the air as the bullets passed his face. M'Kee has been arrested.. Two doctors are attending him. Wellington, July 22.
