SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS.
ANOTHER ENCOUNTER WITH MATABELES. Cape Town, July 21. Lord Grey, Mr Cecil Rhodes, and Colonel Rhodes have arrived at Matoppo Hills. General Carrington directed an attack to be made on the enemy's position. They were shelled out of the hills and followed to Baboana, a stronghold among the kopjes and caves at the source of the Tulli river. The Matabele succeeded in holding the caves, though they lost GO. The English loss was three killed and 11 wounded. Scouts are holding the southward passes to prevent a retreat. Captain Baden-Powell had a narrow escape of being captured. The First Chamber of the Transvaal Volkeraad has prohibited the sale of alcoholic liquor to the natives.
