The Future of the Maori.

MEETING AT TE AUTE. (From our (Jim Correspondent,) A meeting of the past ami present students of Te Aute College was held at the college last night, the Rev. Archdeacon Williams in the chair. Seeing that the Maori race is degenerating in every way, the thoughtful students of that institution called a meeting of the past and present members of the college for the purpose of framing schemes by which the Maori race might be diverged from that destructive path in which they are at present speeding headlong. I am glad to state that not only dusky faces were in the meeting-room, but sympathizing pale faces, among whom were noticeable Kev. A. V\ uliams, Mr Thornton, and Mr Hector Hawkins.

The mcotint: was unanimous in pointing out that the Maori rac-c must die out if the Natives are allovrt d to go on as they are going, and a isolation was carried to the following effect■"That some means of ameliorating the Maori race should he taken In hand." It was proposed, seconded, and carried, that a conference of the past and present students be held in the beginning of 1897, when the promoters of the meeting will go more into details on the subject of the Maori race. An address by the chairman was listened to with interest, as was also the remarks of the head master of the college, Mr Thornton. Those present were entertained at tea by the Rev. Archdeacon Williams, and a very happy time was spent. Your correspondent views with interest the result of the deliberations of last evening, and hopes that every effort will be made in the direction mentioned.
