THE POMAHAKA MUDER.
- THE INQUEST. [By Telegraph.] Special to Standard. Dunedin, This day. The inquest on the body of Mary Matson is still proceeding at Lawrence. Twelve witnesses were summoned, and the evidence of six taken yesterday. Very few new facts were elicited. John Bain, rabbiter, detailed the finding of the body floating in the lagoon on .July 4th, and repeated a conversation he had with the accused Matson, who bad said he would not be humbugged with his wife much longer. Detective Herbert gave evidence that when the prisoners were arrested Matson said he was not guilty, but had struck her with the lash of a whip. The female prisoner said the couple had often quarrelled, but she had never seen Matson strike his wife. The rope found tied round the sack in which the body of the murdered woman was found corresponded with that found on Matson's plough.
