GENERAL ITEMS. Auckland, July I I. Geffrey, the escaped prisoner from New South Wales, was taken back by the Anglian to-day in charge of Constable Campenell, of the New South Wales police. The Papakura Hotel was burned down this morning. The origin of the fire is unknown. The building was insured for 4*600 in the Imperial office, but the insurance on the stock is not known. At an inquest on Chai Hi >okes, of Ponsonby, who commit i» ■ cide, a verdict of temporary in unit> was returned. He had been suftenng from insomnia, which I'r Knight said was quite sufficient to unhinge 1 mind. Wellington, July 15. Wiggins, a saddler, was fined £IOO on each of two charges of defrauding the revenue. The fines were both reduced to £25 each. Chkistcht-rch, July 14. The Progressive Liberal League passed a resolution condemning the Bill introduced by the Government to deal with the Canterbury college and approving Mr G. W. Russell's proposal. 1 tnkfun. July 14. A conference was held between the representatives of the Anglican and Presbyterian clersy to-day to consider the religious instruck riqut-'.ion. under the presidency of Bishop Neville. It is understood that no decision was arrived at, the Anglicans pressing for the New South Wales scheme, while the Presbyterians declared for Bible in schools. Carl Matson and Hannah Bertha Clark were brought up at Lawerence to-day and charged with the murder of Mrs Matson. A remand was granted till Friday. The inquest will be reopened to-morrow.
