[Special to Standabd.] Auckland, July 14. # A sad case of determined suicide occurred to-day, when Mr C. Brookes, a retired bootmaker, who was suffering from a severe complaint, shot himself through the heart. It is supposed that his physical infirmity brought on mental derangement and caused him to destroy himself. On the trip from Paeroa to Auckland a fire broke out in the engine.room of the little steamer Te Aroha. The fire was got under after a struggle which lasted some hours. The engine room was gutted, but no other damage was done. Hawera, -July 14. Two of the escaped prisoners, Alley and Gukuschuski, were captured near Eltbam this morning by a surrey party, who surrounded them to a gully afte? a smart chase. Dukemk, July 14. John Blaif, who represented Caversham in the Provincial Council, will contest the Clutha seat. The motion before the Supreme Court providing for the winding-up of the Ward Farmers' Association was granted unopposed. The appointment of liquidators will be settled on Augusi 4th,
