A STARTLING TRAGEDY.

MURDER AND SUICIDE. [By Telegraph.] Special to Standard. Auckland, July 9. Particulars of a tragedy at Maungatautari show that a Maori named Turoa and his wife frequently quarrelled, and that on Tuesday last, when she went to a creek for water taking her child with her, Turoa followed her. He had previously planted a gun near the spot and while the woman was in the act of stooping for water he shot her dead. Then he took the child on his back and firing a gun with his toe the charge went through his chest, killing him instantly. The child escaped, though it is evident the intention was that the same shot should kill both.
