A letter on Prohibition, from the pen of the Rev. Dr Hosking, is crowded out tliis issue. It will appear to-morrow. A large number left this morning to witness the Hunt Club Steeplechase meeting at Onga Onga. The Post Office clock, which has been laid up for alterations and repairs for some time, was again on duty again. The usual monthly meeting of the Fire Brigade was held last evening, Captain Brausche in the chair. Accounts to the amount of £2O 16s 2d were passed for payment. The wreck of Dale's fire was purchased by the brigade at <£2 ss, and sold at an advance of £l. Photographs had been received from Mr Carnell representing a section of the main street with the engine in the foreground. It was resolved to forward framed copies of the photographs to the Borough Council, the Wanganui Fire Brigade, and Messrs Shand, Mason and Co., London. It was resolved that ,B. L. Knight's account for the coal used by the brigade in putting out the fire on his own premises be forwarded to the Borough Council. Dr Tosswell was elected a life member of the brigade for services rendered. A letter was received from the United Fire Brigades Association enclosing usual forms for the annual returns. Mr Popplewell presented the brigade with some gas-fittings. It was decided to hold another social on July 15, the admission to which would be 2s per doable ticket. This concluded the business. . r
The members of Pollard's Opera Company passed through town by the express this morning on their way to Woodville. Mr W. Y. Dennett sells at his Auction Mart to-morrow a large stock of furniture, saddlery, blankets, musical instruments, cricket bats, produce, &c., &c. The Australian cricketers seem to be regaining their lost form, and the innings now been played against Hampshire promises to be a record for the tour. Ploughing is in full swing all over the district, and a larger area than ever known is being broken up. Preparations are being made for several large fields under barley. The Kintoscope, Edison's latest marvellous and scientific invention, about which we have heard so much will be on exhibition in Hastings next week. Wherever shown, it has been fairly rushed, and local residents may look forward to a rare treat. Upon consulting with Mr J. IT. Smith, head master, it has been decided to change the' morning for ministers giving religious instructions in the State School from Wednesday to Friday. The Maories of Otaki are reported to be about to erect and run a flourmill of their own. Mr Stanford fined a man Robert Stanley £1 at Foxton on Wednesday for procuring liquor for prohibited persons. Mr Knott, the temperance lecturer, was nearly drowned in the Otaki river, which was flooded, and his limelight lantern and pictures were spoiled. T. P. Halpin, the cash draper, Napier, advertises in this issue that he is now holding a genuine drapery sale of winter goods, including the latest styles in ladies' jackets, mackintoshes, hats, dress stuffs, flannelette, flannel, &c._, all at greatly reduced prices, as every line must be cleared before the spring goods arrive. It is reported that the representative of a Danish firm is at present touring New Zealand with the object of gaining particulars as to the condition and prospects of the dairying industry, and to ascertain the true value of the opposition which Denmark may expect from the Australasian colonies in connection with the dairying industry. An audacious highway robbery took place in Flinders street, Melbourne, a few days ago. A young fellow arrived at the wharf by steamer from Geelong, and on coming off the gangway placed a pocketbook containing a .£'2s note and three £1 notes in his breast coast pocket, and when he got to King street a man asked him for a match. Smith unhesitatingly felt his side pocket for a matchbox, and the other immediately shot his hand across and, snatching the pocket - book, ran away. In New England the faimers are immensely pleased with their experimental sugar beet culture. One man last season relied on a patch to help his stock during winter, and they were fat whilst his neighbor's died from starvation. Recently 15s per ton was offered for sugar beet delivered in Sydney, but no one would sell, in that the root is becoming the mainstay of winter feeding at Tenterfield. Farmers generally, wherever they may be, and provided the locality is suitable, could not do better than grow a crop of sugar beet for winter use. Turnips and mangolds ars not to be compared with so nutritious and saccharine a feed.
