FIRE IN AUCKLAND. [By Telegraph.J [Special to Standard.] Aix-kland, This day. At a fire in Wyndham-street last night, an old man named James Hughes, 72 years of age, lost his life. He was apparently endeavoring to escape by a window when overcome with smoke, as his body when found was but little burned. A peculiar accident happened in connection with the same lire. When the water was turned on at a plug in Shorfc--I.indirect, near the City Club Hotel, the plug blew out and the water smashed a front window of the hotel, Hooded the bur and injured the stock.
