KIRBY AND BASSETT BEFORE THE COURT. [By Telegraph.] [Special to Standard.] Wellington, This Day. The S.M. Court was crowded yesterday afternoon, when Kirby and Basseto were brought before Mr Martin, the former charged with blackmailing John Hermann and extorting money for him hv threatening to accuse him of an abominable crime, and Bassett charged with aiding Kirby to escape from the colony. Sir Robert Stout and Mr Jellieoe, who were engaged to defend Kirby, were unable to attend, and Dr. Findlay applied for a remand. This was opposed by the Crown. After argument a remand was granted until to-day. Bassett was remanded until the 29th inst, bail being allowed in two securities of £2OO each. Mr Wilford appeared for accused.
