THE AUSTRALIANS AT HOME.
AGSINST MIDLAND COUNTIES. POOR STAND BY THE VISITORS London, June 18. The Australians began a match today at Birmingham with an eleven representing the Midland Counties. The weather was fine, and the wicket in excellent condition. The attendance, however, was only moderate. The Australians were the first to bat, but Hume created much destruction, and was mainly responsible for the first six wickets falling for 24. Eady and Jones, however, when associated livened up the game and put on 55 runs in 35 minutes. The innings closed for 138. The chief scores were :
Hume took six wickets for 55 runs, Attewell one for 42, and Porter one for 9. The Home team have lost three wickets for 168, the chief scorers being : Jones, bowled ... ... 81 Gun, bowled ... ... G9 Quaife, not out ... 45 Lilley, not out... ... 14 Gunn and Quaife played excellent cricket for their runs.
