ASIATIC RESTRICTION.

The Bill introduced by the Premier to stop the immigration of Asiatics is drastic enough and will go a long way to accomplishing the ends sought. The Bill provides that Asiatic passengers carried on vessels arriving in New Zealand shall be limited to two for every 200 tons of the tonnage of such vessel under a penalty. The master of a vessel carrying Asiatics must pay a poll-tax cf £IOO for ever such passenger. There is ample provision for the protection of those Asiatics who having been bona fide residents of New Zealand desire to be temporarily absent from the colony. The Bill will stand revision in Committee, but we hope to see its principles retained and the Bill pass on to the Statute Book.
