The sitting of the Native Appellate Court will be resumed liere on Monday. Nominations for the Hawke's Bay Coursing events —Waipawa Stakes and Hastings Stakes—close this evening. The surplus for the last quarter of the financial year is given at £"215,558. At the Supreme Court, Dunedin. yesterday, a Chinaman for defiling a young girl wili sentenced to two years' bard labor.
On "Wednesday next P. A. Herman and Co. will hold an important sale of timber in Hastings. As the lots are in useful sizes and as there is no reserve a large number of buyers are expected. Two policemen were charged at the Coromandel Court yesterday with being drunk and disorderly. They were fined LI and costs, and have been dismissed from tlie force. According to a northern paper, the Premier gets £7OO a year as a member of the advisory board of the German mining syndicate, which has its headquarters in Auckland. Mr T. Teague, the retired light-weight champion pugilist of New Zealand, has opened a class for teaching boxing in Hastings. Those anxious to become proficient in the noble art of self-defence cannot do better than interview such an authority as Mr Teague. What might have proved a serious accident happened last evening, when Mr A. C. Lewis, the well-known solicitor, was driving in a buggy to town, and came into collision with a team of draught horses. The trap was considerably knocked about, and Mr Lewis was thrown out with some force, but lie escaped with a few bruises. At the annual meeting of the Hawke's Bay A, and P. The Amateur Operatic Society hold a pi'iietice for their forthcoming opera " lolanthe " in the Oddfellow's Hall last evening. There was a fair attendance of members and the conductor, Mr A. A. George, put them through a good wholesome course of chorus work, the progress made during the evening being most satisfactory. The conductor announced that a provisional caste of characters had been made but the committee decided to wit-h----old it for the present. As it is the society's intention to stage the opera early in October it behoves every member to attend the practices regularly in order to sustain the reputation of their previous productions, or better still to eclipse them. The management would welcome a few more tenors who should give in their names at once to keep up with the work.
The Good and Kind Society held their first social in St. Matthew's Hall last night. About forty couples were present. Dancing was kept up till 12.30. The music was all that could be desired. The musicians were Miss Canlton (piano), Mr Barrett (picolo), Mr L. Fowler, (cornet). Mr T. Bishop earned out the duties of M.C. in a very creditable manner. Mr Louis Brown's catering was excellent —as is usual. The following members contributed songs, etc. : —Mr T. Bishop, song (encore) ; Mr Wawn, song (encore) ; Miliums, stump speech ; Mr A. Home, Auto-Harp solo (encore) ; Mr F. Canlton, song (encore) ; Mr V. I'eddie, clever display on the single trapeze and slide. The refreshments were handed round by the Committee to save time and confusion, as is sometimes the case. The Committee were thanked for the creditable manner in which they carried out the social. The following are the Committee : —Mr J. Wawn, chairman ; Mr T. Bishop, secretary ; Mr I). Spence, assistant-secretary; Messrs A. Beale, G. A. Fowler, I). Lincoln, M. Cheer, 11. Catherall, and J. Henry. The club intends to hold a social every four weeks. The Pahiatua Herald is informed, oil excellent authority, that the boundaries of the proposed Bush electorate will run from the township of Eketahuna to the township of Danevirke, both inclusive.
The wife of a farmer, John Parker, was killed by a tree in Latrobe, Tasmania, which Parker felled. The man did not know his wife, whoivas 70 years of age, was standing near. The Melbourne Stock Exchange men are complaining that the "West Australian excitement, which is running mad over in Adelaide, is killing the Melbourne market. Two Melbourne men who recently threw up their seats on the Melbourne Exchange, are reported to be making hay while the sun shines on the Adelaide market.
