THE MONGOLIAN
Thk "Premier in his speech at Wellington on Wednesday last made an effective and impassioned appeal to his audience to support him in his efforts to restrict the immigration of Chinese, lie said, " There was no mother in New Zealand if she were true to he» offspring, her sex or to her race, who ought not to help the Government in imposing restrictive legislation." The disclosures of alleged immorality on the part of Chinese shopkecrs at Dunedin has apparently impelled the Government to make inquiries, for the Premier quoted from a report specially furnished by the police as to the doings of the Chinamen in Wellington, and from this report it is clear, although, not stated so by the Premier, that gross immorality prevails among the Chinese residents of Wellington. The Premier proposes dealing with the Chinese question in two ways, one by passing legislation preventing their coming to the colony, and the other by empowering the local authorities to frame bye-laws for the regulation of those who are already here, under which all Chinese engaged in trade should be compelled to apply for a license. The remedy proposed is very much on the lines suggested by the Greymouth Borough Council, and Ave have no doubt that any remedial measure will be cordially welcomed and heartily supported by the people.
