PROHIBITION.
[To THE Eiutoi;.] Sir, —When '• John Hosking " can prove to anyone that his assertion Biblical wines is correct then I will believe that he knows something about what he is writing. Hut whether the wine at the marriage in Galilee was intoxicating or otherwise is quite besides the question. Prohibition is a subject on which faddists can hang what they are pleased to term arguments; hut there is little sense in any of those adduced by "J. 11." I maintain thai Prohibition will never prohibit those who wish to obtain drink from getting the quantity they require: and that it is ridiculous because one or or two drinkers happen to overstep the mark of propriety that all should be debarred from obtaining a beverage that stimulates the system. We have tried prohibition in gambling in this eoloiiv, with what result'! There is more of it now than ever there was and there are many more hypocrites than ever there were. I am a firm believe in Temperance myself, and believer that faddists might do some good by talking other " reforms ' than Prohibition. It will never come in this colony so long as there are so many weak-kneed and weaker-brained advocates of the u cause." I would deal further with the question, but I know your space must be valuable. —I am., "a.c.. Common- Sense.
