STRUCK A SNAG. Wellington, -Tune 4. The Ohau. bound from Port Chalmers to Westport, put in here to-day. The captain reports that whin about two miles off the Brothers Lighthouse at 2.30 this morning, and when going full speed, the vessel struck heavily what he belived to be a rock. The pumps were sounded and although the vessel was not making water, he determined to put into Wellington instead of going on to Westport. W hen the steamer was in the Terawhiti rip he found that she was making water, and on examination of the vessel here it was seen that one of the rivets in the forehold had been knocked clean out. The other damage will not be ascertained till the vessel is taken on the slip. The captain says he is certain that he did not strike Cook rock, which is in the vicinity of the spot, and has an idea that the object was a large snag. A preliminary inquiry was held before the Collector of Customs today, and the evidence will be forwarded to the Marine Department.
