TRAINING NOTES
[By Gipsy Guano.]
This morning the training-track wore its usual animated appearance. The temperature was a bit sharp, and it was not until 8 o'clock that work was commenced, when the sun caused the heavy frost to thaw and the green sward to glisten. Tout 3 were not as numerous as I have seen, and possibly the " cutting " morning air had more than a little to do with their absence. A number of horses were in attendance, but the bulk of them were not asked to extend themselves. A noticeable feature, too, this morning was the appearance of quite a number of young 'uns, who will be heard of anon. The Plug was the first to move, and participated in about five rounds at three-quarter pace, finishing well. The son of July i 3 looking very well, and should soon add another feather to the cap of his trainer. Glengarry was taken twice round on the flat at a steady pace. The old grey is in good heart and will make a big bid for success at the coming meeting. T Rose and Direct Veto were associated in a double circuit at a good serviceable pace, the former going very strong at the finish. Musketeer accomplished two rounds in good style. The Remington horse is looking well, and shauld soon pay bis way. Sparkle did a couple of rounds in good style. Forty Winks and Sabreui were associated in steady work. Midas had Dauntless for an associate in a three-round steady go. The Challenge Stakes winner is undoubtedly looking well, and is a racehorse of the first water. Lord Raven was sent a couple of circuits, going very strong. The Hon -J. D. Ormond's pair— Hopeful and Otiri—went twice round over the schooling fences. Both horses went very well, and negotiated the timber in good style. A number of other horses were restricted to slow work. Tally-ho left for Auckland by steamer to-day. Mr Arthur Hyde has taken over Scrap Iron 11., and intends nominating him at the coming Hawke's Bay meeting. Under new hands the son of Martini-Enfield should improve verysoon. He sadly needed condition at the Waipawa meeting, and when he was raced with covers on he looked every inch an outsider.
