Auckland, May 26. His Excellency the Governor gave a ball to-night in honor of Her Majesty's Birthday. Over GOO invitations were issued. The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society's ifarm competition for Sir John Bennett Laws' shield resulted this year in the executors of the late William Scoullar, Southland, securing the shield for the best-managed farm of over 400 acres, Mr G. H. Gilroy, Stirling, taking that for farms under 400 acres. The winners in each case were the present holders. An inquiry opened at Falmerston today before Major Keddell, S.M., and Mr A. M'Kerrow, into the action of the Stock Department in prohibiting the sale for human consumption of milk from 25 cows belonging to Thomas Johnston. The question for decision is whether the inspectors had exceeded their powers in prohibiting sale. A Chinaman named Gum Gin was committed for trial for defiling a girl aged 12 years and 10 months. The girls concerned in this case were different to those who gave evidence against a previously convicted Chinaman. Another charge against Gum Gin remains to be dealt with.
