LOSS OF LIFE

Sydney, May 24

Very heavy general rain with fierce gales has been experienced along the coast for the last 48 hours.

Three wrecks are reporterd. The coasting steamer Byron with a cargo of coal foundered this forenoon off Newcastle.

Her crew, consisting of nine men, narrowly escaped. They had barely time to leave in a boat before the vessel went under, and they were subsequently picked up by a life-boat and landed safetly. The schooner Couding and barquentine Ivaroola were driven ashore and wrecked at Morna Point, near Nelson's Bay.

The crew of the former vessel escaped safely in a boat; but a boat containing the Ivaroola's crew capsized and the mate was drowned. The others were washed ashore completely exhausted. One seaman was so far gone that he died shortly after reaching land. The Karoola was bound from Lyttelton to Sydney. She was off port some days ago, and was driven north by the gale.

At the time of the accident she was seeking shelter. Only meagre particulars of the disaster are yet to hand. Shipping generally has been delayed by the weather. May, 25. The crew of the steamer Bryon that foundered off Newcastle Are re four hours in open boats before being rescued. The weather was bitterly cold and heavy seas breaking aboard. The names of the men drowned in the wreck of the barquentine Karoola are unknown. The weather is now breaking-
