SACI N G IT EM S

By Gipsy Ge\ni>,

The winter meeting of the W aipawa Racing Club takes place oil JI on day on the Kaikora Racecourse. A special passenger train leaves Hastings for the course at ( ,>.50 a.m., returning again at G. 50 p.m. The return fare has been fixed at 4s first class, and 2s second class. The first race—Birthday Handicap—starts at noon, for which live horses have decided to face the starter. I have rather a fancy for the top weight, BI.Ar.NKV. and shall pick him as the winner. In the Hack Race, Rainbow occupies the pride of place with the burden of 9st 7lb, which should be a stopper to his chance, although he is a good honest horse, and I have- no doubt he will be seen in the van when the winning-post is Reached. My selection, therefore, is

Slumber. Six horses have decided to start in tho big handicap, for which Lotion is top weight. On his running at the Park, he must have a chance, and I shall take Lotion or Dkuiiy Lank to furnish the winner, with a. slight preference for the bitter. Tn the Trial lliudlcs, ten horses are <juit• • satisfied witli the handicapper'.-j adjustments, with Rangipunehu as top weight with list. In my opinion this will not stop him, and I shall expect the son of Patriarch, RAXi;ti>rxKiir, or Billy to he first past the winning-post, unless the Turk upsets the " pot." In the Hack Flying, I see nothing to bee. t Rainbow, and I shall plump for him. The Welter should prove the best race of the day, fourteen horses having decided to start. 1 shall expect Blt-mokk and Ranmitnehu to fight it out between them. The last race has seven starters, and whatever beats Popgun will l>e awarded the stakes.
