N.S.W. ITEMS.

Sydney, May 22.

The licensed victuallers have asked the Premier to appoint a Royal Commission to inquire into the liquor traffic before proceeding with the Local Option Bill. Mr Reid said he could not promise that a Commission would be set up, as a majority of the Cabinet were in favour of local option, besides which it would interfere with the promise given to the temperance bodies some time ago. William Ager. who had been wanted since 1890, on a charge of embezzling the sum of £IBOO, moneys belonging to the Fire Brigades' Board, has been arrested at Benalla, Victoria. He was arrested in that place under an assumed named, charged with appropriating money belonging to the local council.
