Auckland, 3,lay 20. A fire broke out this forenoon in a block of cottages at Parnell, the property of Allen McGuire, contractor. One was partially destroyed. The block was insured in the New Zealand office for £550, and the furniture for £125 in another office. The body of Miss Norah Watkins, daughter of the Rov. W. J. Watkins, who had been missing since Fridny night, was found this moraintt on the beach near White Bluff, Onehunga. From information received at \Yaihi by telegram there is reason to believe the body found in the Martha shaft, and identified as that of Frank O'Neill, is not the remains of that man, but of some other person. Con-table 15rooking is seriously ill from blood poisoning caused by handling the body. There is little hope of hi- recovery. Tbe Hon E. Mitchelson is a passenger by the Mariposa for Sydney. He expects to b- in ihngton by the first week of the - ion of Parliament. The committv arranging for the celebration of the Premier's birthday on June 22 has decided that it should take the form of a social and dance, and during the evening the Premier will be presented with an illuminated address. An inquest oil the body of an infant found in a box in the pardon attached to I)r Collins's residence vesterdary, and labelled " Somebody's Darling," began this afternoon. After the evidence as to finding the body, the police asked for an adjournment to enable further investigation to be made. The circumstances of the case were suspicious, and the po-'t mortem showed thai the child had lived for a few days and been given food. The inquiry was adjourned for a week. Christ-church. May 20. At a meeting of tne Christciiurch Tailoresses' and Pressers' Union it was resolved to invite the various labor bodies and Liberal societies to send a delegate to a Conference to consider the sweating evil. The winter show of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association opened to-day. There are upwards of 400 exhibits, and though the entries of stock are confined to a few cattle and a small number of pens of sheep the exhibition is most interesting. Dtwedix, May 20. Another Chinaman was arrested today charged with assaulting girls under ike age of consent. A man named James Lyndhurst has been apprehended on a charge of stealing money and jewellery from a dwelling at liyal Bush, and also of stealing a horse and saddle at Wintou.
