Mysterious Poisoning Case.
A mysterious case of poisoning bus bee n reported to tlie police at Auburn, near Melbourne. Four children, belonging to the family of Edward Wifien, residing al Bnrwool road, became very ill after eating sonic candy, and are in a critical condition. About 8 o'clock in the morning the eldest daughter, aged 16, found some sweet stuff on the dining-room table, and gave it to her mother, w ho divided it amongst the five children. All but the youngest ate their share, and shor f, y r 'trrwards were seized with irl ik t. ling and severe pains in . h. They were in great iV-'m ~ .* : 1 T>rs. John and James MerrilU'i-- v, l- summoned. Tfc- M recovered somewhat under \ i ''eatment, but Arnold, aged 11 yr-ars, continues in a most serious condition. It appears that the youngest did not like the taste of the candy, and gave his share to Arnold. How the candy came to be on the table is a mystery. The children declared they did not buy any sweets, and Mrs Witl'en has expressed the opinion that some person must have been attemptto poison her children. The police are investigating the matter.
