SCENE IN A CHURCH.

Tlie Row Mr Burton, in charge of the Anglican Mission at Esperance, Western Australia, delivered an extraordinary sermon on Sunday. In strong terms he denounced the immorality and intemperance of the town. Ih' considered that drunken men should be made to wheel barrows through the public streets, to remove the superfluous sand from the city in sight of their friends. lie characterised the gathering held in connection with the railway question as a general drunken orgy, and condemned leading officials and residents of the town for taking part iu it. The congregation had great difficulty in controlling their merriment at the sermon, and several outbursts of laughter took place. Previous to the commencement of the service seven telegraph operators took seats in the building, and Mr Burton asked them to keep quiet, and not to talk. The men got up and asserted that they were not children. They did not wish to create a disturbance, but as earnest and devout worshippers they would not stand any insults. They then, iu a body, marched out. Dr. Black has sent iu his resignation, and all the officers connected with the church have followed his example.
