AGAINST ESSEX,
A WIN FOR THE VISITORS
London, May 15. The match against Essex was continued to-day. The Australians continued their first innings, and were not disposed of until they had compiled 238. Hill played a splendid innings for 73. Gregory contributed 31 in good style, and Kelly made.(?) Essex had 109 for five wickets when the stumps were drawn fer the day, Carpenter (51) and Perrin (20) being the principal scorers. May 16. The match was concluded to-day, when the Australians won by seven wickets. The Home team's second innings closed for 149, which is mainly attributed to the bowling of Trumble, who was in excellent form. The Australians only required 93 to win, which was compiled with the loss of three wickets. The principal scores were : Gift'en, bowled... ... 19 Iredale, not out ... 43 Trott, not out ... ... 20 The next match commences at Eastbourne to-day, against a team representing the South of England.
