The " Frost King " sat on his throne this morning 111 Hustings. Members of the Protestant Alliance Society are requested to follow the remains of their late Bro. Win. Gigg to-morrow. The lad Jarvis, who received such terrible injuries 011 Thursday evening, passed a quiet night, and is brighter to-day. Captain Russell will give an address in Woodville shortly. He goes as far south as Invereai'gill before Parliament meets. 011 next Court day (Thursday) a large number of breaches of the Borough byelaws will come on for hearing. Hon. James Carroll visited Hastings last night, and proceeded to Napier this morning, 011 his way to Gisborne, where he delivers a political address. The Faust Family have made all arrangements for their opening night in Hastings on Monday next. They appear two nights only, and 110 doubt the talented company will receive the support it deserves. The Waipawa Mail says:—Mr J. J - Buckanan has succeeded in raising healthy sugar cane from seed at Hampden. The cane is also growing well on Messrs Buchanan's land at Blackburn, which demonstrates the fact that both the soil and climate are suitable for this crop.
Our Napier correspondent's letter is unavoidably held over until next issue. Out of 50.000 male adults in South Australia 2000 are Jiistices of tlio Peace. A farmer complains to the Y\ annate Settler about the low prices of sto"k at the Munaia sales : Yoiuighit cosvs, JCA 10s ; 601b sheep, 4s lid. It is understood that Mr J. 11. Tvirby, of Napier, has purchased the Marton Mercury, and takes possession oil May '23 rd. The young man Robert Lee, who was injured by a fall of earth in a gravel-pit at Fordell, died on Wednesday from his illjuries. He was only 24 years of age. Hecently four children in a Yictorian township were poisoned by eating candy in which arsenic had become mixed. It is suited this is the second attempt to poison the same family. Mr Alexander, a farmer at Maugaweka, had his right hand shattered by the accidental discharge of a gun on Tuesday last. The Dunedin Star states that it has good reason for saving that it is highly improbable that Mr Justice Buckley will resume his seat in the Supreme Court. At Mastorton yesterday a man named Adams was charged with a serious assault on Mr T. Duncan, J.P.. and was sentenced to one month's hard labor. The freezing of rabbits alone this year at the Mataura freezing works will increase the Company's income by fully X'">oo. Xo extra labor or motive power is needed to carry on this work in addition to the sheep freezing. Tom Clarkin, stated to be one of the best football forwards in the colony, met with a nasty accident at Karangahake recently. 'While chopping wood he was struck in the face by a block, and he will lose the sight of one eye. We reirrei to have to record the death of another old Ilastim-'s resident, Mr W. which took place at o o'clock this morning. Deceased was employed on the J joroue'li Council for a number of years, and until a lortniglit ago was in fairly rrood health, when he was overcome by sickness and was forced to relinquish his dunes. He leaves a wife and a large family oi young children. It is reported irom Niagara, Westralia, that a mob of men recently attempted lynch law on a man who had struck a barmaid with a bottle. A rope was put round his neck, but the treeless west failed to provide a suitable place to fix the rope to, and the assailants proceeded to kick him to death. The man's life was only saved through his feigning death. It is s;tid that it requires a bishop to lose his life before a needed reform in railway management is carried out ; and it is unfortunate that such an accident as befel the youth Jar vis on Thursday evening was necessary to convince owners of vehicles of the fact that lights were required after sundown. Last night there were more vehicles with lamps in the town than ever seen before.
The fortnightly meeting of the Wesleyan Band of Hope was held in the church Inst evening. There was a large attendance of children and adults. The programme was a varied one, and was luueh enjoyed. Siddle, and 1 Scale ; ami Messrs Land, Heigh way, Goldsmith, Collins and Watson. A hymn and prayer brought a very enjoyable meeting to a close. Archbishop Redwood will arrive at Napier (his evening for the purpose of holding a fortnight's mission which will bo opened to-morrow. The Archbishop is a plain convincing speaker who appeals rather to the reason than to the emotions of his audience, and whilst he has little or 110 claim to be considered an orator ho possesses a magnetism and a strength of personality in the pulpit which at once grips the attention of his congregation and maintains the interest undiminished throughout. The church is expected to be crowded, and extra seating accommodation has to be provided.—Napier correspondent. The Good and Kind Society held their weekly meeting at St. Matthew's Schoolroom last night. There were over GO members present, and six new members were elected. The society is now in a very llourislnng condition, and have in hand fully .£5. After a short meeting it was decided to spend tho rest of the evening in the various items of amusements, such as dancing, etc. The following are the persons who contributed towards the evening's enjoyment: —The Rev. .J. Hobbs, a short story ; Mr Warn, banjo song (encore) ; Master Victor Pcddie gave a very clever exhibition 011 the Roman rings : Mr F. Caulton, song (encore) ; Mr Alf. Home, auto-harp and song (encore) ; Mr G. Brown, song (encore) ; Mr H. Cheer, step dance ; Mr Hunt, song (encore) ; Messrs R. G. and J. C'atherall, duet; Amusement Committee, song " Good Old Mother," which terminated a very enjoyable evening.
