DEMANDING AN EXPLANATION
[Spkcial to Standard.]
Wellington, this day. The Premier addressed a public meeting at Otaki last night. Referring to the Press and the manner in which it was being prostituted in the interests of the Conservative party, the Premier drew attention to the gross partiality and partizanship displayed by the Press Association. He also referred to the extortionate sum which had been demanded from the proprietors of a new journal at Hastings for participation in the rights and privileges of the Association, and said if the Press Association thought this high-handed action would be tolerated much longer they made a grievous mistake. He considered it was the duty of the Government to ask the Press Association for an explanation of this proceeding, and upon that explanation would depend the course of action to be followed by the Government.
