SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS.
CHARGES MADE AGAINST SIR HERCULES ROBINSON.
A ROYAL COMMISSION SUGGESTED.
GENERAL DENIAL BY THE GOVERNOR.
London, May 5. Dr Leyds, the Transvaal Government's Agent, has complained that Sir Hercules Robinson's report that 6000 troops were being massed at Mafeking has caused a feeling of disquietude, especially as the officers alleged they were destined for the Transvaal. He hinted that affidavits had been made by Boer waggoners asserting they were hired to assist in an invasion.
Sir Jacobus de "Wet, British Agent at Pretoria, has confirmed Dr Leytls' complaint, and suggests a joint commission of inquiry. Sir Hercules Robinson has given a peremptory denial, and scouts the idea of a commission as preposterous. He '*> said that only 1100 troops were pro- , ceeding to Mafeking, and half of them have not yet arrived. Frequent assurances of no hostile intention towards the Transvaal are needless. Sir Hercules has also cabled Mr Chamberlain stating that he never had the slightest suspicion or hint of Dr
•Jamieson's raid. The Times denounces the conditions of Sir Jacobus Do Wet's suggested commission of inqury as egregious folly.
