A large number of horses "were on the track this morning, but work was mainly restricted to cantering exercise. Cha.iiishot left Lyttelton on Saturday per s.s. lonic for England. Nominations for Wanganui Derby and Two-Year-Old Stakes close to-day. Old Prime Warden has at last retired from active service. Dauntless has heed backed for £SOO to win the New Zealand Cup. It is probable that the Dtuiedin .T.C'. will abandon the Forbury racecourse. St. Frusijnin is favourite for the English Derby. Norton is reported to be going well in his training. Very little work is being done on the Riccart'-n training-track at present. A writer in the Australasian describes Mr (ioilan's horses in England as being " played out." The Australian mare Utter (MartiniUralla), which was shipped to America some time ago, has broken down. Lord Randolph, who cost 2,:-500 guineas as a yearling, and never won a race, has been sold for £'2oo. Miss Nelson is being .schooled over hurdles. All Mr P. Butler's horses were submitted for sale by auction at Christchurch on Saturday. The programme for the Otaki Maori Racing Club, to be run on the 25 th inst., is advertised in another column. A southern contemporary has a strong fancy for Fearless for the next Derby. The writer may not be aware that the son of Dreadnought has been dead nearly two months. A clear case of picking a •' dead bird."
Mr. Ilobbs. the Ashburton trainer, has had a run of bad luck during the past racing season, inasmuch as his horses were just beaten in several of the big events, viz., Chaos, second to Euroclydon in the X.Z. Cup ; Saracen, second to Brooklet in the Wellington Cup ; and Lady Zetland had to play second iiddle to Spindrift in the Wanganui Cup. We hope to see the Ashburton trainer reverse the order of things during the coming season.
Obi Waterbury is going so badly on the other side that his owner has given him aw:iv.
At the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, the District Handicap was won by Flossie, who paid £•> 17s. Alice won the Autumn, paying lis (10s tickets). The Selling Race was won by Fraulein ; dividend, 18s (10s tickets). Carbine won the President's Handicap, and paid £2 15s (10s tickets). The Ponv Saddle was won by Thomas ; dividend, 10s. Hazehlean won the Kilbirnie Handicap, paying IG-., and Carbine won the Final, paying £1 10s.
