REPORTED RESIGNATION OF SIR PATRICK BUCKLEY.
[To Tin: Editor.; Sir, —In the cause of Justice it is to be hoped that the reported resignation of Sir Patrick Buckley from the Supreme Court Bench is not without foundation. Everyone will regret that his health is not as good as it might be ; but after the very severe sentences passed by him at the last sitting of the Napier Supreme Court perhaps it is aswell in the interests of Justice that he should not again preside, for it is almost certain that any juryman of intelligence will prefer to give a prisoner the benefit of a doubt rather than that he shall run the risk of receiving an outrageous sentence. As a gentleman I am an ardent admirer of Sir Patrick, but as a Judge I regret that I cannot congratulate him with tempering justice with mercy. I am, Jtc., Justice. Hastings, May 1, 1890.
